Both psychologists and Accredited Mental Health Social Worker are qualified mental health professionals who provide evidence-based therapy and can offer Medicare rebates. While our training pathways differ, both professions support people experiencing a range of mental health concerns. Psychologists focus more specifically on clinical/psychometric assessments and diagnosis, whilst mental health social workers take a holistic approach. This means considering the broader impact of relationships, life experiences, strengths, trauma and overlapping layers of disadvantage on wellbeing.
-
The uniqueness of the social work space involves working outside of the medical model of mental health. This means that we are less focused on diagnosis, and more grounded in understanding how a person’s environment may have contributed to a cluster of experiences, without putting a label on it. If you are requiring a diagnosis or formal assessment alongside psychotherapy, I’d be more than happy to warmly refer you to a network of wonderful psychologist colleagues that can assist you.

The Felt Sense takes a creative approach to ensure your sessions feel individualised to your needs. A safe therapeutic relationship is often the best predictor in creating meaningful and lasting change. To do this, here are some examples of what a session could look like:
Access to sensory toys and fidgets with permission to stim. You’re also very welcome to bring your own.
Sitting wherever and however is comfortable.
“Parallel play” style activities (like mindful colouring, craft, coregulation of nervous systems).
Subtitles for telehealth sessions to allow you to process information at your own pace.
Respect for your sensory preferences (e.g., dimming lights, loops).
Movement, time-blocking and breaks.
